Jio is a parent company of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL).
The company was co-founded by Dhirubhai Ambani and Champaklal Damani in the 1960s as Reliance Commercial Corporation. In 1965, the partnership ended and Dhirubhai continued the polyester business of the firm. In 1966, Reliance Textiles Engineers Pvt. Ltd. was incorporated in Maharashtra. It established a synthetic fabrics mill in the same year at Naroda in Gujarat. On 8 May 1973, it became Reliance Industries Limited. In 1975, the company expanded its business into textiles, with "Vimal" becoming its major brand in later years. The company held its Initial public offering (IPO) in 1977. The issue was over-subscribed by seven times. In 1979, a textiles company Sidhpur Mills was amalgamated with the company. In 1980, the company expanded its polyester yarn business by setting up a Polyester Filament Yarn Plant in Patalganga, Raigad, Maharashtra with a financial and technical collaboration with E. I. du Pont de Nemours & Co., U.S.

Birth of Jio

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited was established on 15 February 2007 by Mr. Mukesh Ambani.
The company was registered in Ambawadi, Ahmedabad (Gujarat) on 15 February 2007 as Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited. In June 2010, Reliance Industries (RIL) bought a 95% stake in Infotel Broadband Services Limited (IBSL) for 4,800 crores (US$690 million). Although unlisted, IBSL was the only company that won broadband spectrum in all 22 circles in India in the 4G auction that took place earlier that year. Later continuing as RIL's telecom subsidiary, Infotel Broadband Services Limited was renamed as Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) in January 2013.

GRAND LAUNCH OF JIO
27 December 2015

On the eve of Reliance founder chairman Dhirubhai Ambani's 83rd birthday anniversary, the telecom arm of Reliance Industries, Reliance Jio, launched 4G services for its employees under the Jio brand name. The event saw the third-generation of Ambanis - twins Isha and Akash - taking centre-stage and welcoming the audience.

TV, Newspapers, Internet get flooded by this news. Everyone was so excited because Jio has surprised people with a lot of things. "FREE Internet for 6 months, Unlimited Internet, FREE voice call  & SMS" are the things that were so surprising for Indian consumers.

Before the launch of Jio, the data prices in India were very high and the consumer has to pay more than 250 rupees for 1 GB up to 1 month.

After the launch of the Jio launch, consumers ran to Jio stores for taking Jio's sim which was absolutely free and the activation process was so easy and fast. Within 5 minutes the sim gets activated through AADHAAR card.

After testing its new 4G LTE network for months with roughly two million people, Reliance Industries announced earlier this month that its new telecom service Jio will be available to all starting Sept. 5. In a price sensitive market such as India’s, Jio’s free voice calls and “unlimited” 4G data offering is naturally attracting thousands of people to its stores.

The average cost of 1 GB of wireless data has fallen from 269 in 2014 to 11.8 in 2019.

Maharashtra (excluding Mumbai) had the highest number of wireless subscribers, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu (including Chennai).

Consumers in Uttar Pradesh (West), Bihar & Punjab used the most data per month on average.





Average data consumption in Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh (East) was lower despite a higher than average number of wireless subscribers.
